Terpenes: the aromatic and functional DNA of cannabis
Terpenes are naturally occurring volatile and mobile compounds produced by the plant.
They are responsible for the aromas, flavors, and much of the sensory identity of cannabis.
Far more than just perfume, terpenes play a key role in what is known as the entourage effect:
They accompany and modulate the action of cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG…), amplifying or tempering their effects.
Each variety has a unique terpene profile that influences:
• the aroma (citrus, pine, floral, woody…)
• the type of effect (relaxing, energizing, soothing, clarifying)
• how cannabinoids interact with the body
More than 200 terpenes have been identified, but about ten are dominant:
Myrcene (relaxing), limonene (energizing), pinene (clarifying), linalool (calming), caryophyllene (potential anti-inflammatory).
High-quality cannabis preserves these terpenes, because it is their synergy with cannabinoids that gives each genetic strain its true personality and depth.
